Enthusiasm latest 3 / prev 6 (falling)
Darden’s AI thesis is practical and operational: better restaurant forecasting, scheduling, food ordering, support-center task automation, and faster IT development. The latest call did not explicitly discuss AI, but it continued to reference forecasting, targeted digital marketing, and data-driven menu optimization. Credibility is moderate because the use cases are concrete and tied to Darden’s operating model, but management gave no numeric AI impact.
PAST (realized)
- Data and insights have also grounded all the great work Yard House has done on menu optimization — the new burger, pizza, and taco platforms they have rolled out over the past three years are easier to execute and receive higher guest satisfaction scores.
- Even some things that we have been looking to do for years that we were struggling to get done, AI is getting it done a lot faster.
CURRENT (now)
- Our proprietary POS system serves as the nerve center of our integrated restaurant technology ecosystem, with applications including payroll, guest forecasting, and labor management providing key data and making our restaurant managers' jobs easier so they can spend more time focused on guests and team members.
- Across all our brands, we use digital marketing in a targeted, cost-effective way to build brand equity and support incremental sales.
- Our extensive data and insights ensure we continually meet our guests' expectations and allow us to identify opportunities to improve the guest experience and drive incremental sales through continuous menu innovation.
- We are using AI and machine learning to give our managers a much better forecast of their business so they can schedule better.
- We are using tools to help them write better schedules. They can order food better.
- We are doing things here in the support center to improve on tasks that are repetitive, using AI to start projects faster and get things done faster.
- We have yet to take any jobs out because of AI.
- We have a great team in IT here, over 200 people strong, and they are using it to write code faster, to get a lot of savings in what they do so that we can have more tools for our teams at a faster pace.
FORWARD (guidance)
- The other 200,000 work in the restaurant, and I would say we are probably not going to lose any team members in the restaurant because of AI.
- We are going to make their jobs better. We are going to make the guest experience better.
- That is where you are going to see the benefit of AI.
- You probably will not see it specifically because it is not going to be necessarily guest-forward.
TRACK RECORD — PROMISE vs DELIVERY
—/100 (no quantified promises) no-quantified-promises 6 calls reviewed
Across six calls (Q2 FY2025–Q3 FY2026), Darden management never stated a quantified AI/ML/analytics target with a number and milestone (no AI revenue, cost, productivity, or autonomy goals). They cite proprietary POS, data/insights, and labor productivity qualitatively and report delivery and menu rollout metrics without framing them as AI promises, so AI promise-vs-delivery cannot be scored from this transcript set.
PRICED-IN (REFINED)
MEDIUMEst. revisions flat · Fwd P/E 22.0 · EV/Sales 2.3x
AI claim maps to Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Fine Dining Segment
Estimate revisions do not show clear upward migration: recent buy/strong-buy counts have eased, while price targets are flat versus last quarter and only slightly above the last-year average. Forward revenue and EPS estimates grow, but at a modest mature-restaurant pace rather than showing a sharp AI-driven acceleration. Valuation is relatively rich for a mature restaurant operator at about 22.0x forward EPS and 2.3x EV/sales, so even without rising revisions, some operational upside is already being capitalized. AI efficiency or revenue benefits would most plausibly flow through the major restaurant banners, especially Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, making the priced-in verdict medium rather than low.

BUSINESS IMPACT - QUALITATIVE MATERIALITY
5/10 qualitative impact moderate medium-term · soft evidence
Where AI matters: forecasting, scheduling, food ordering, marketing, IT workflow
AI/ML is plausibly useful in Darden's high-volume restaurant operations through better demand forecasting, labor scheduling, food ordering, targeted marketing, menu optimization, and faster internal software delivery. But management frames it as manager enablement rather than a guest-facing or labor-replacing transformation, and there are no quantified savings, sales lift, or margin targets.
Caveats: Benefits may be hard to isolate from normal restaurant productivity initiatives; Forecasting and scheduling tools can disappoint if demand volatility or manager adoption is poor; Competitive parity risk as large restaurant chains deploy similar systems; No disclosed quantified AI revenue, margin, or EPS contribution
AI DISRUPTION / CANNIBALIZATION RISK tailwind · 1/10
AI does not commoditize the core product: Darden sells in-restaurant hospitality, food, brand experience, and operational consistency, which remain physical and people-intensive. Automation may improve back-office and store execution, but it is unlikely to deflate the core revenue unit the way it would for billable-hour, content, or information-service models.

ANALYST QUESTIONS ON AI
Q (Q3 FY2026, Gregory Francfort): This may be a little bit out of left field, but I am curious your thoughts on some of these AI tools that are coming on, how much you are using them at corporate, what that is unlocking for you from an analytics perspective. Any thoughts on what may be changing inside your business with what is going on?
A: Not quite out of left field. I am going to start by saying that at the core, we are and we always will be a hospitality-driven company, which means you need people. We are a people-focused business, so we are going to need them. Our team is doing an incredible job every day. We are using AI and machine learning to give our managers a much better forecast of their business so they can schedule better. We are using tools to help them write better schedules. They can order food better. The best thing you can do as a manager is to have a great forecast so you can staff your restaurant right and have the right amount of food. We are doing things here in the support center to improve on tasks that are repetitive, using AI to start projects faster and get things done faster. We have yet to take any jobs out because of AI. We have 200,000 employees in this company and only about a thousand of them work here. The other 200,000 work in the restaurant, and I would say we are probably not going to lose any team members in the restaurant because of AI. We are going to make their jobs better. We are going to make the guest experience better. Ultimately, the approach for AI for us is about amplifying the expertise of our people, not replacing them. It helps us deliver on exceptional service and that is what we will keep doing. We have a great team in IT here, over 200 people strong, and they are using it to write code faster, to get a lot of savings in what they do so that we can have more tools for our teams at a faster pace. Even some things that we have been looking to do for years that we were struggling to get done, AI is getting it done a lot faster. That is where you are going to see the benefit of AI.
